In the Black Sea near the Russian resort city of Sochi, Ukrainian naval drones struck a Liberian-flagged commercial oil tanker on Tuesday evening, October 6, 2026. According to published reports, the vessel named Aframax Rio came under attack approximately 15 kilometers off the coast of Sochi, causing fires to erupt on the deck and the surrounding sea surface.

According to official Russian news agency TASS, the Russian Ministry of Transport stated that there were 23 crew members on board, all of whom are Indian nationals. Russian maritime rescue teams safely evacuated all 23 crew members to shore, with officials confirming no casualties among the personnel. Firefighters initially struggled to approach the vessel due to thick black smoke, but the blaze was contained early Wednesday morning, October 7. Sochi municipal authorities and the Sirius Federal Territory announced the temporary closure of coastal promenades and beaches as a precautionary safety measure.

According to Ukrainian newspaper The Kyiv Independent, the tanker Aframax Rio had been placed on Ukraine's sanctions list in February 2026 for operating as part of Russia's shadow fleet, transporting crude oil from Black Sea ports such as Novorossiysk and Taman. Ukrainian security sources noted that naval drones had previously targeted Sochi infrastructure and fuel depots near Adler International Airport in September. While Ukraine's General Staff did not issue an official statement, defense sources in Kyiv indicated that striking Russian oil logistics is a legitimate response to ongoing strikes against Ukrainian energy networks.

According to British broadcaster BBC News, the operation underscores the escalating asymmetric naval warfare across the Black Sea, demonstrating that Ukrainian uncrewed vessels can strike deep into southern Russian coastal waters. BBC reported that thick plumes of smoke were visible from central Sochi.

According to American newspaper The New York Times, the primary strategic objective of these long-range strikes is disrupting Kremlin oil revenues that fund the war effort. The persistent threat of drone attacks has already impacted political gatherings in the area, prompting organizers to relocate the Valdai Club annual forum from Sochi to Moscow in September.
